Derek Abbey '11, the University of San Diego's veteran student services coordinator, was one of 15 military veteran men and women honored as a finalist for San Diego County Veteran of the Year Award at a Nov. 4 luncheon held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Events Center in Mission Valley.

The nomination, put forth by The Military Order of World Wars San Diego, recognized Abbey, a 24-year retired U.S. Marine Corps Major, for his diverse service not only to USD’s military-connected student population, but also with the Military Ally program and volunteer service with the Bent Prop Project, which is dedicated to locating and assisting with identifying American prisoners of war and missing in action from World War II and other conflicts around the world.

Abbey, who also oversees the USD Veterans Center (in UC 225) and is a USD graduate alumnus and current PhD student in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, was supported at the luncheon by several USD community members — current students, staff and administrators — as well as BentProp Project founder Pat Scannon, and Abbey’s wife, Michelle.

The luncheon, hosted by the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park, awarded the 2016-17 Veteran of the Year Award to Nadirah Sahar, who was nominated by the Veterans Village of San Diego.
