USD School of Business Hosts Business Strategy Competition

19 College Teams from U.S., Canada & Middle East to Vie for Best Business Model

If there’s one thing business students have learned in the last year, it is that they need to be prepared for a crisis. 

Financial meltdowns, higher energy costs and labor strikes are just a few of the potential incidents that could challenge teams of students from around the world at this year’s Business Strategy Competition, hosted by the University of San Diego School of Business Administration. The event takes place from April 16-18 at the Bahia Resort in Mission Bay. Students register Thursday. Friday’s events run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event goes all day Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The longest-running competition of its kind, (45 years), gives each team the opportunity to manage a mock manufacturing company. Teams are judged on their response to real-world business dilemmas.

Teams in the competition include USD, San Diego State University, and a team from the Sharjah’s Women College in the United Arab Emirates. For most of the Sharjah students, it will be their first visit to the United States.

Using a computer-generated model, teams have been competing remotely since February, but the most intense phase of the competition occurs during the three days in San Diego where senior executives from Motorola, Ernst & Young and other firms will judge the teams’ performances and select the winners.
