Successful Research Week at USD to Return in 2016

ResearchWeek

The success of the inaugural Spring 2015 Research Week at the University of San Diego, an event that showcased many different ways in which external funding contributes to the work of faculty and research opportunities for students, will return in Spring 2016.

The next Research Week at USD is scheduled for April 11-15, 2016, said Traci Merrill, director of USD’s Office of Sponsored Programs.

The first-ever weeklong campus celebration of research took place April 13-17, 2015. In all, 135 faculty members from all schools across campus participated in this effort.

Highlights from last year included:

• A deans’ luncheon showed how philanthropy and research funding work together to grow the university, with school-by-school examples of the changes that have occurred because of external funding.

• The College of Arts and Sciences, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering and the USD Veteran Center each shared their work by hosting open houses and tours for all campus visitors.

• Visual Arts students prepared exhibits of 24 creative works in the Student Life Pavilion Exhibit Hall. Furthermore, gallery exhibits were open at the Fine Arts Gallery, the David W. May American Indian Gallery, and the Robert and Karen Hoehn Family Galleries.

• Capstone presentations, School of Business Administration faculty research conversations and interactive dialogs added academic value with small-group exchanges.

• A reception celebration of scholarly and creative achievements awarded lapel pins to more than 100 faculty and administrators who submitted proposals in the previous year. The message on the specially designed pins translated to “By teaching we learn; Through research we grow.”

• The 25th anniversary of Creative Collaborations, an exhibit of collaborative research work done by students and faculty, took place. There were 185 posters and five interactive exhibits presented by teams of undergraduate researchers.

In total, the inaugural event involved more than 1,200 participants, 31 events, eight academic units, 52 departments, six centers and institutes and four galleries. The week was planned by the Office of Sponsored Programs, and supported by the Office of the Vice President and Provost, Foundation Relations, and the Office of Undergraduate Research.
