Honoring the Memory of Professor Stanley Gurak, 1949-2010

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science mourns the loss of one of our own, Stanley Gurak, PhD, long-time professor of mathematics and computer science, who passed away on August 21 while on vacation in Greece after suffering a heart attack. Dr. Gurak received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Stony Brook in 1971 and his doctorate in mathematics from UCLA in 1975. Dr. Gurak will be sorely missed by his students and colleagues, and will always be remembered for his professionalism, dedication and laughter.

In recognition of Dr. Gurak’s dedication to our students, a scholarship fund has been established to honor his legacy. Contributions can be made to:

Dr. Gurak is survived by his brother, John, sister-in-law, Paula, a niece, a nephew, and many cousins. On October 1 at 12 p.m. a mass will be said in the Founders Hall Chapel in Dr. Gurak’s memory. A memorial reception will be held the same day from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Serra Hall, Room 215.
