USD Biochemistry Major LoLo Landry Awarded Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship

The University of San Diego Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is proud to announce that Lauren “LoLo” Landry, a biochemistry major and research student in Dr. Peter Iovine’s lab, has been awarded the Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship by the USD Alumni Association.

Landry was selected for the scholarship based on her strong academic standing and her commitment to making a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by cancer.

The Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 in honor of Kyle O’Connell, the son of USD alumni Michael O’Connell ’87 and Julie (Belfiore) O’Connell ‘88. Kyle passed away in 2005, at the age of 9, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. His story inspired a group of USD alumni to create the scholarship to support students who are passionate about advancing cancer research, providing comfort to patients and families, and advocating for cancer awareness and action.

Landry’s academic focus and personal experiences have shaped her vision for a career dedicated to helping those facing serious illness.

“The Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship is a very meaningful award that I am beyond honored to receive,” Landry said. “Continuing to share the legacy of Kyle’s brave fight against brain cancer is nothing short of inspiring, and I thank the USD alumni who are able to make this award possible.”

Landry added that the scholarship reinforces her commitment to both scientific research and compassionate care.

“As a recipient of this award, I intend to pay it forward by making a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by cancer,” she said. “I believe such an impact can be achieved not only through education, continued research and collaboration, but also through empathy and human connection. Cancer has affected several people close to me, and this scholarship embodies the very reason I want to dedicate my career to helping others facing illness.”

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry congratulates Landry on this achievement and commends her for embodying the spirit of the Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship. Her dedication to science and service reflects the values of the USD community and the legacy of the O’Connell family.
