Philosophy Department Anti-Racism Statement

Philosophy Department Anti-Racism Statement

We, the Philosophy Department at the University of San Diego, are outraged by the police killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and by the murder of Ahmaud Arbery over the last few months. We acknowledge that these killings are part of a legacy of violence against Black people and of a piece with ongoing racial disparities seen throughout the U.S. and the world. We hereby renew our commitment to anti-racism and to doing better as individuals and as a department to fight against white supremacy.

To this end, we commit to:

  • expanding our program by creating new courses such as African American Philosophy, the History of Africana Philosophy, and the Development of Racism;
  • discussing how we might diversify existing course content;
  • hosting a conference on the philosophy of race and racism;
  • creating a faculty reading and discussion group around issues related to race and pedagogy.
