Statement from the USD History Department Regarding George Floyd's Death and the Protests for Justice

As historians who study marginalized communities and social movements as well as racism, colonialism, fascism, state violence, and oppression both within and outside the United States, we are sickened to see history repeat itself. The department joins others in remembering George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery, just the latest victims of direct and systemic racism in the United States. We send our thoughts and prayers to the Floyd, Taylor, McDade, and Arbery families and others who have suffered. For those of you who mourn the loss of Black lives taken at the hands of the police, know that we mourn with you. We also stand in solidarity with those currently demanding justice and fighting against racial oppression, often at great risk. You are not alone. We stand with you.
