begin quoteDr. Galvan was my biggest support and inspiration for finding a field somewhere between clinical psychology and neuroscience! - Dr. Joanna Peters

Joanna Peters, PhD, psychology alumni from the USD Class of 2008, credits Dr. Galvan to be a huge support and influence on her career. During her time at USD, Joanna took all of the classes Dr. Galvan offered at the time, and served as Dr. Galvan’s Biopsychology lab assistant. She also served as the USD Psychology Club Social Chair, as well as Psi Chi Vice President from 2007-2008. Joanna found Dr. Galvan’s Biopsychology courses to be challenging, but absolutely fascinating. The courses furthered her interest in neuroscience. The most memorable and influential classes Joanna took with Dr. Galvan were her Biopsychology course (with lab), as well as a research course reviewing various papers and touring labs. It was with Dr. Galvan’s support and assistance that helped Joanna secure an internship in molecular and integrative neuroscience at Scripps in 2007. Though it was a valuable experience for her, the internship ultimately confirmed that she wanted to pursue something more clinical such as Neuropsychology. Neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships. To Joanna, it is a perfect intersection between neuroscience and clinical psychology.

Joanna went on to earn her Doctor of Psychology at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University, while doing research in the cognitive neurophysiology lab of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After completing her clinical internship at Dartmouth, followed by a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Joanna secured a position as a pediatric Neuropsychologist at Carolinas Rehabilitation of Atrium Health. She has recently accepted another position within the hospital system. Come November, Dr. Joanna Peters will be in the Levine Children’s Hospital building her own clinic in neuro-oncology.

The Department of Psychological Sciences congratulates Joanna on all her accomplishments!
