Dr. James Weyant, a USD psychology professor, has recently been published in the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. His research article, Reducing Implicit Bias Toward Non-Native Speakers of English Via Perspective Takingfocuses on an experiment to see if a perspective taking exercise would reduce bias towards those who speak English as a second language, specfically towards native Spanish speakers.

In this study, participants were told to establish an impression of the speaker before listening to a recording of a woman speaking. Participants were then asked to imagine a typical day for the speaker. The group practicing perspective taking were asked to also take into account what the speakers perspective may be. The results of this experiment showed a reduced negative bias towards non-native English speakers due to the perspective taking exercise.
