Garibaldi Bowl 2019

Garibaldi Bowl 2019

The Department of Environmental and Ocean Sciences has been hosting the annual San Diego Garibaldi Bowl for the last four years under the direction of Assistant Professor Jennifer Prairie. The Garibaldi Bowl is the San Diego regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), which is an academic competition and program that addresses a national gap in environmental and earth sciences in public education by introducing high school students to and engaging them in ocean science. Dr. Prairie enjoyed participating in this event when she was a high school student in San Diego and volunteering for the event when she was a graduate student. Now under her leadership, 50+ high school students participate every year in this ocean science trivia competition.

This year’s competition, which was held on Saturday, February 23, included 12 different teams from seven different local schools. Students had a lot of fun both competing in the competition and participating in our new science activities room!

Congratulations to Canyon Crest Academy for winning this year’s Garibaldi Bowl! Our champions from Canyon Crest Academy will be traveling to Washington D.C. in April to compete in the NOSB finals competition.

A special thank you goes to our volunteers without whom this event would not be possible. Volunteers included EOSC students, faculty, staff, alumni, along with members of the San Diego community. We hope to see you all next year for Garibaldi Bowl 2020!
