Katelyn Rose King-Utzinger performing Zaum Box by Christopher AdlerKatelyn Rose King-Utzinger performing Zaum Box by Christopher Adler

On November 9, Music faculty Dr. Christopher Adler travelled to Indianapolis, IN, to attend the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. The theme for PASIC's Focus Day, dedicated to contemporary concert percussion music, was the best percussion works composed in the twenty-first century.

Dr. Adler's composition Zaum Box was among the works featured. Zaum Box is a collection of ten compositions for speaking percussionist setting Russian zaum, or trans-rational futurist poetry. Three works from the collection were performed at the convention by Switzerland-based percussionist Katelyn Rose King-Utzinger, who is also one of the percussionists who commissioned and premiered the work. This unique project was published as a limited-edition box set of scores and released in a series of videos on-line, with realizations by King-Utzinger and videography by cinematographer Ute Freund, produced in Berlin, Germany with partial support from a University of San Diego Faculty Research Grant.
