New Acquisitions for University Galleries' Print Society

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Each fall for the past three years, supporters of the University of San Diego’s print collection have been invited to accompany the staff of University Galleries to New York. There, they attend the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) Print Fair, the largest print-specific art fair in the world. While in New York, the group participates in a number of print-related events, including behind-the-scenes visits to museums and private collections, tours of temporary exhibitions, and time spent together perusing the booths at the IFPDA Print Fair.

This year, the Print Society enjoyed three fabulously sunny and productive days in New York, and accomplished something unprecedented for the university: more prints than have ever been acquired by this group, known as The Print Society, than in years past. This year’s group included Director of University Galleries Derrick Cartwright, USD President James Harris, trustees Daniel Herbert ’82, ‘86 and Susanne Stanford ‘75, along with trustee emeritus Robert Hoehn.

2017’s acquisitions included seven major works in a variety of media — from chiaroscuro woodcuts to engravings, etchings, and color aquatints — dating from the early 16th century to present day. All but one of the works acquired was by an artist not previously represented in the permanent collection at USD. These new images, by Max Beckman, Wayne Thiebaud, Kerry James Marshall, Martha Tuttle, Andrea Andreani, Louise-Madelaine Hortemels-Cochin, and Hans Sebald Beham, are available to view by students, faculty and all other members of the USD community.

Since 2013, The Print Society has acted as the primary support group for USD’s print collection. Their generosity has enabled the collection’s most significant purchases to date, including works by Edvard Munch, Mary Cassatt, Sybil Andrews, Anthony van Dyck and Hendrick Goltzius.
