It is difficult to estimate the value of partnering and designing creative international educational opportunities for students. At the University of San Diego, we are fully committed to international education and believe that this is best done through collaboration. In January 2020, we celebrated the partnership between the University of San Diego School of Business and the COPPEAD Graduate School of Business Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. 2020 marks 20 years of collaboration and more than 100 joint consulting projects with MBA students from these two universities.

Over these past 20 years, ten different USD School of Business faculty have traveled to Rio de Janeiro and joined together with COPPEAD faculty to supervise MBA students from both universities as they worked in teams and served as business consultants for local companies. Some faculty have even participated multiple times - like Dr. Steve Conroy who participated on seven different occasions and has even started to learn Portuguese.

In attendance were several COPPEAD faculty who have participated in the program over the years. This included Dr. Ricardo Leal, who served as the dean of COPPEAD in 2000, and Dr. Rebecca Arkader, the vice dean of international programs. Both are now retired but were instrumental in helping USD Associate Provost for International Affairs Denise Dimon in designing the creative collaboration. The current dean of COPPEAD, Dr. Elaine Tavares, also helped supervise consulting projects while she was still a faculty member.

Although everyone gathered to celebrate the success of the joint consulting projects, the collaboration between these two institutions extends beyond the MBA consulting projects. Dr. Jaime Alonso Gómez, former dean of the USD School of Business Dean and currently a professor of management, serves on COPPEAD's International Advisory Board. Dr. Denise Dimon serves alongside Dr. Maribel Carvalho Suarez of COPPEAD as one of four co-editors for the Latin American Business Review.

In addition, USD and COPPEAD faculty participate in faculty exchanges and graduate students participate in semester exchange programs at both universities. USD also hosts short term international programs for COPPEAD’s Executive MBA students, which brought more than 50 visitors to campus just last year. The USD School of Business is also currently discussing a joint master's in finance program with COPPEAD. All of these opportunities have developed due to the strong relationship cultivated with its Brazilian partner over the years.

The consulting project established by both schools has grown such a reputation that COPPEAD now has to turn away some local companies looking to have USD and COPPEAD MBA students offer their services to improve their business. While it may be difficult to quantify the results of this long-standing collaboration, its impact is undeniable.
