The International Business Speaker Series, organized by the Ahlers Center for International Business, wrapped up its Fall 2019 lineup with a presentation by Grace Lee, chief human resources and diversity officer at Cubic Corporation and a University of San Diego School of Business alumna. Lee has lived in seven countries, speaks four languages and is a first-generation immigrant. Speaking to a packed room of USD undergraduates, graduates, faculty, staff, and local community members, she discussed the 4 c’s -- create capacity, grow capability, empower community, boost credibility -- to build talent that will allow you to create a global portfolio.

Lee advised that “you have to find a way to create the time and space to devote to what’s important to your learning.” Then you can pursue the rest -- growing global capability by participating in study abroad and internships at multinational companies here in San Diego; empowering your community and network by joining school clubs, professional groups, and volunteering; and boosting your credibility by becoming a “master” of something. The biggest takeaway was in how you answer Lee’s final question, “If I had two minutes to describe you to a stranger in an elevator, what would I say about you?”

Prior to Grace Lee, the International Business Speaker Series featured Ryan Patel, the former VP of global development at Pinkberry, current senior fellow at the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University and contributor for CNN, BBC, Fox Business, Nasdaq and other media outlets. He spoke on leveraging your entrepreneurial spirit and drew upon his countless experiences in developing businesses to give insights to students and community members in attendance, including Carl Dumesle, a current MBA student and winner of the recent Fowler Business Concept Challenge

The Ahlers Center International Business Speaker Series brings distinguished international business experts and scholars to campus to discuss best practices and current business trends. The series is one of many initiatives by the Ahlers Center that provides global learning opportunities to the USD School of Business. This is a free event with lunch included and is open to the USD and local community. Stay tuned for the spring schedule of speakers.
