On March 28, the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate (BMC) hosted its 23rd Annual Real Estate Conference. Nearly 500 real estate professionals attended this signature event.

Geoffrey Kasselman, SIOR, LEED AP, executive managing director of Newmark Knight Frank and immediate past president of SIOR Global, opened the conference as the first featured speaker. Kasselman is an innovation-minded futurist focused on harnessing transformative disruption and technology convergence in order to bring actionable opportunities to the commercial real estate industry. His fascinating presentation on "The Exponential Future of Everything" reviewed these disruptive changes.

Spencer Levy, chairman of Americas research and senior economic advisor for CBRE was the second featured speaker. He discussed the cause and effect of macro real estate trends throughout the country.

A panel of municipal leaders from several of the largest cities in San Diego County followed the two speakers. The panel discussed current and future land use and was moderated by David Graham, chief innovation officer at City of Carlsbad. Other panelists included: Gary Halbert, city manager at the City of Chula Vista; Mike Hansen, planning director at the City of San Diego; Rebecca Jones, mayor of the City of San Marcos; and Andrew Keatts, assistant editor at the Voice of San Diego.

During the last hour of the conference, two optional breakout sessions were offered Attendees attended either of the following two sessions:

Breakout Session 1:
Featured a presentation on "Opportunity Zones" by Phil Jelsma, partner at Crosbie Gliner Schiffman Southard and Swanson LLP (CGS3).

Breakout Session 2:
Featured a presentation on "New Technologies and Their Real Estate Impacts" by Taylor Mammen, managing director of RCLCO Real Estate Advisors.

Following the conference, the Burnham-Moores Center and the Real Estate Alumni Association hosted an alumni lunch after the conference at the FOX Sports Grill at the Hilton Bayfront hotel. Approximately 30 USD School of Business real estate alumni attended the lunch.
