Master of Science in Real Estate Candidates at the MIPIM Conference

In March, Stath Karras, executive director of the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate (BMC), Ian Gill, chair of the BMC's policy advisory board and principal of Silvergate Development, joined four Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) students in Cannes, France for the 30th Edition of Marché International des Professionnels d'Immobilier (MIPIM).

The event brings together the most influential players from all international property sectors and offers unrivaled access to the greatest number of development projects and sources of capital worldwide. Established in 1990, MIPIM is a four-day real estate event which hosts more than 26,000 participants, 350 exhibiting companies, representing more than 100 countries.

During the event, USD School of Business MSRE students served as official “tweeters” and bloggers, covering a wide variety of keynotes and speakers and had the opportunity to network with thousands of real estate professionals from around the world.

“This trip opened my eyes about how important networking within this industry really is and it gave me a view of behind the scenes," says Mareike Grebener '19 MSRE. “Talking to real estate professionals from around the globe while tweeting quotes and writing blogs offered us insights on how the real estate industry prepares for the future. From sustainability and green cities, to new ways to live on water, the wide-range of topics at this event were insightful and a very worthwhile experience.”

The MIPIM team also got to meet with the Global Head of Research Will McIntosh, PhD at USAA Real Estate Company. He enlightened the group on topics, including using artificial intelligence (A.I.)  for research and the investment strategies of USAA in this phase of the market cycle. The group also met with Jim Costello, senior vice president at Real Capital Analytics (RCA) who gave the group a tour through their data platform.

Mareike and Lauren Stead '19 MSRE traveled to France ahead of the MIPIM event and explored Nice, France for two days. Following the conference, Mareike, Lauren and Rocio Budetta '19 MSRE, spent an additional two days in Cannes sightseeing, exploring the local food specialties, visiting the farmers markets and enjoying the sun on the coast.

The MSRE student blogs can be read on the Global Real Estate Experts website and their Twitter posts can be viewed at @MIPIMWorld on Twitter.
