In just its first year of existence, The Brink, the Small Business Development Center at USD, has already been named the number one accelerator in San Diego by the San Diego Business Journal. Startup accelerators support early-stage, growth-driven companies through education, mentorship, and financing.

“We projected to work with 60 clients in our first year, but we have more than surpassed our expectations, having already supported 321 clients,” says Mysty Rusk, Director of The Brink.

Rusk attributes the center’s success to the fact that it is industry agnostic, meaning it accepts clients from all industries rather than working with a specific subset. She also emphasized that The Brink’s small staff is supported by ten senior-level advisors, who attracted a lot of emerging talent to the center.

The majority of the Brink’s clients are based in San Diego County, with many already achieving their own successes. Nine of the coolest companies in San Diego, as named by the San Diego Venture Group, and two finalists of CONNECT’s top innovative products are clients that have received services from The Brink.

The Brink’s rapid success is also due to the tremendous support from USD, specifically the School of Business, Professional and Continuing Education, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, and the School of Law. In a commitment to changemaking and a deep desire to serve the community, these centers have all come together to create an entity that develops startup businesses to foster economic growth in our local region.
