Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate Announces New Policy Advisory Board Members

Earlier this year, the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate announced the appointment of three senior real estate executives to its Policy Advisory Board (PAB). The PAB provides policy guidance and financial support to the Center and real estate students at USD.

“We are excited to welcome Mike Smith, Harki Parekh and Sumeet Parekh as our newest Policy Board Members,” says Stath Karras, executive director of the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate and staff liaison to the PAB. "These distinguished members of the real estate industry bring exceptional talent and expertise to our committee and will provide expert guidance to our real estate students and to the BMC.”

Mike Smith is managing principal, San Diego and Mexico for Cushman & Wakefield. Mike is responsible for recruiting and supporting top talent and continuing to build client relationships. A native of San Diego, Smith spend 19 years in commercial brokerage in San Diego working for CBRE and for Burnham Real Estate. He moved to Northern California in 1999 to work for CBRE and held multiple positions within CBRE, including President of the West and Northwest, overseeing operations of 17 corporate offices across five states. Smith joined Cushman & Wakefield in June 2015 as President of the West and was promoted to his new role within Cushman & Wakefield in January 2018. He joined the Burnham-Moores Center’s Policy Advisory Board in January 2018.

Harkishan “Harki” Parekh is a partner at HP investors. He brings more than 35 years of real estate experience as a broker, principal investor and operator in Southern California. Parekh provides firm oversight, investment committee guidance, fundraising and deal sourcing. Parekh’s experience includes co-founding the firm BRE Brokerage Commercial (now part of DTZ), leading his own development firm, Cal-Diego builders, and most recently, as a direct investor/operator at HP Enterprises. Parekh’s investment background reflects his entrepreneurial mindset, spanning across multiple asset-classes and project lifecycle phases. His prior investments include development, value-add, and core-projects in the multi-family, retail, and hospitality sectors. Parekh holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University, and a B.Com from University of Bombay. He joined the Burnham-Moores Center’s Policy Advisory Board in January 2018.

Sumeet Parekh is the founder and managing partner of HP Investors., Founded in 2010, HP Investors is focused on the investment and development of infill retail and office assets on the west coast. The firm’s long-term focus and depth of knowledge in its core markets have drawn a number of blue chip private and institutional investors. Over the past five years, the firm has acquired over $500M in real estate assets including over 25 buildings in downtown San Diego. Prior to founding HP Investors, Parekh acquired, structured, and managed over $3B in real estate investments in New York City for The Carlyle Group, one of the largest private equity real estate investors in the world. His projects at Carlyle included helping acquire and manage the successful development of multiple large-scale residential condominium projects as well as other office and retail investments. In addition to his experience at Carlyle, Parekh has held positions as a real estate investment banking associate at Merrill Lynch and as a corporate strategy consultant at Deloitte. Parekh was born and raised in San Diego and holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS from the Marshall School at the University of Southern California. He joined the Burnham-Moores Center’s Policy Advisory Board in January 2018.
