2017 Real Confidence™ University Challenge Results

In January, Altus Group, NAREIT and NCREIF announced the winners of the 2017 Real Confidence™ University Challenge (RCUC). The 2017 RCUC was an investment competition comprised 36 universities and colleges with more than 190 students competing to win up to $50,000 for their institution by producing the top performing portfolio for the year.

Each university team was allocated one billion dollars in theoretical capital among a variety of commercial real estate investment opportunities within the public and private equity and the public and private debt sectors.

The 2017 University of San Diego (USD) team comprised of Robert Case ’17 MSRE, Adam Goff ’17 MSRE, Nick Kolbe ’17 MSRE, Michael Koullas ’17 MSRE, Chris Nesbitt ’17 MSRE, and Judge Ryan ’17 MSRE. The team was advised by Norm Miller, Hahn Chair of Real Estate Finance at the University of San Diego School of Business. Team USD came in fifth place overall and the team won “best private portfolio.” USD’s year-to-date returns were 22.02%, compared to the first-place team with 35.8%. Over the length of the 2017 competition, payouts were made to six different schools, including USD.
