USD's 2018 ARGUS University Challenge Team

The Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate (BMC) within the University of San Diego (USD) School of Business announced this week that a team of Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) students from the University of San Diego School of Business was awarded second place in the 2018 ARGUS University Challenge. Cornell University took first place.

The 2018 USD team included: Christian Holbrook ’18 MSRE, Seth Kamphoefner ’18 MSRE, Rachel Kreamer ’18 MSRE, Derek Martin ’18 MSRE and David Neinchel ’19 MSRE, and was led by faculty advisor Charles Tu, the Daniel F. Mulvihill Professor of Commercial Real Estate.

"The ARGUS University Challenge provides students an opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in various courses in the MSRE program,” says Tu. “Our program’s continuing success in this competition is the result of students’ strong analytical skills, as well as strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities."

The USD team defeated more than 40 schools from around the world, including the University of Chicago, New York University, Johns Hopkins, UCLA and USC. USD’s MSRE teams have a long-standing history of success in the ARGUS University Challenge, taking first place on six occasions and second place on three occasions.

This highly competitive real estate challenge required each student team to run a comprehensive investment analysis on a commercial real estate case. The USD team approached the case study holistically. They completed in-depth market research, utilized all features of ARGUS Enterprise, including modeling sensitivity scenarios stressing inflation rates and rental income, and also explored alternative solutions that were not provided in the case.

“Participating in the ARGUS University Challenge allowed us to take advantage of everything we learned in the MSRE program,” says Kreamer. “It strengthened and solidified our knowledge and skills and this experience is one we will take with us after the program and into our careers. Being chosen to compete against some of the best business schools in the world and represent the USD School of Business and the Burnham-Moores Center was an incredible honor.”

A panel of judges reviewed the case submissions, determined the 2018 winners (case submissions of each team are hyperlinked below) and awarded $22,000 in cash prizes to the winning teams:
First place: Cornell University
Second place: University of San Diego
Third place: University of Chicago
Honorable mention: Auburn University.
