Professional Experience

Relyea was a partner at Higgs, Fletcher & Mack in San Diego, handling both defense and plaintiffs’ civil litigation cases until 1992. After completing mediation training at Harvard Law School, he established a full-time private mediation practice in San Diego as a mediator and arbitrator in the San Diego office of Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS). In 1999, he opened his own office as a private, independent mediator serving in a wide range of disputes.

Relyea has authored numberous articles for professional publications about alternative dispute resolution (ADR), negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. In 2017, he co-authored, with Dr. Joshua Weiss, a children's picture book for kindergarten to 6th grade students about conflict resolution skills, called, "Trouble at the Watering Hole."

Since 1992, Relyea has been a guest speaker, lecturer, teacher, and mediation trainer for private law firms, bar associations, private companies, government agencies, universities, and law schools. Relyea is a leading mediation training in the United States and internationally. He has trained lawyers, judges, and business people as mediators in and from Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia), India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad), the Middle East (Jordan, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia) and Europe (Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Spain).

Professor Relyea teaches in the area of negotiation.

Relyea teaches mediation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and California Western School of Law.
