- Advancing Black Leadership and Scholarship in the Law
Advancing Black Leadership and Scholarship in the Law Fund Scholarship candidates will be considered by the Assistant Dean of JD Admissions, Diversity Initiatives and Financial Aid, based upon overall qualifications for admission to USD School of Law, including academic record, financial need, commitment to increasing diversity, and support for Black law students, demonstrating leadership in and for the black community in an effort to address racial injustice and prejudice. This scholarship will be available for candidates who have worked to better the experience of the nation’s Black/African-American communities. Preference will be given to Black and/or African- American applicants.
The Advancing Black Leadership and Scholarship in the Law Fund is for students who have demonstrated support for and commitment to:
- Equal access to justice and education for the black population
- Lifting black voices and raising issues affecting black communities
- Fighting against racism, racial injustice, and prejudices
- Showing demonstrated leadership in and/or for the black community on these issues in the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) through internships/clinics/volunteer work, and/or in the broader community
- Christopher McCallister Memorial Scholarship
Family, friends and the Class of 2007 seeking to honor the leadership qualities and entrepreneurial spirit that were hallmarks of Chris McCallister’s life created this scholarship. An award is available to a third-year law student in good standing who contributes to the diversity of the law school and/or to the legal profession generally because of their socio-economic background, life experiences, personal circumstances, or other obstacles he/she may have overcome. Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial skills in professionally related endeavors or in community service or volunteer work (may include leadership roles in student-related activities and projects).
- Congresswoman Lynn Schenk Endowed Law Scholarship
Two scholarships will be awarded to female law students who demonstrates tenacity and determination and who are of modest family economic circumstances. The awardees must be highly self-motivated (demonstrated by work outside of school and overcoming obstacles in pursuing education) and see challenges as enriching. The awardees must have knowledge and appreciation of the struggles of women in America for equality and of those who came before her to take on the struggles of equality. They must demonstrate a desire to open doors for others in the future. Additionally, the awardees must support the values of the Lawyers Club of San Diego, a feminist bar association seeking to advance the status of women in the law and society. In addition to the application, the scholarship committee has requested that a supplemental 1-page statement be submitted prior to the final decision being rendered. The topic will be provided to the finalists.
- Dean Donald Weckstein Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to students with demonstrated financial need. Financial need will be determined in the following way: Law school applications; candidate’s personal statement; participation in classes, clubs, courses and organizations while in college and/or law school; experience and/or proven academic contributions during law school. Strong consideration will be given to students who are first-generation college graduates.

- Delroy Richardson Endowed Law Scholarship
San Diego Gas and Electric endowed this scholarship in memory of their long-time employee Del Richardson. Del was a USD alumnus who was active in community and campus diversity issues. Grants from the Richardson family, other alumni, law firms and corporate contributors have supplemented this endowment. This scholarship is awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need and has evidence of strong academic achievement.
- Haida Massoud Mojdehi Scholarship
The Haida Massoud Mojdehi Scholarship will be awarded to a female Iranian American law student with an interest in service to others, including community and/or public service. The scholarship will be awarded to a law student who meets the requirements and has demonstrated financial need.
- Higgs, Fletcher, and Mack LLP Diversity Scholarship
The Higgs, Fletcher & Mack Diversity Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to a student who has a demonstrated commitment to serving diverse communities. The scholarship supports the firm’s efforts to promote diversity in the San Diego legal community and will be provided to a third (or fourth) year law student.
- Julie M. Robinson Scholarship Fund
A scholarship will be awarded to a female student at the University of San Diego School of Law who is pursuing a law degree as her second career, has a professional interest in business or corporate law and demonstrates financial need.
- Ken Shurko DACA Scholarship
The Ken Shurko DACA Scholarship Fund will provide an annual scholarship to a law student. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated financial need. The student scholar must be a DACA qualified American immigrant who has qualified as a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals student in the United States.
- Kenneth & Thelma Doucette Legacy Scholarship Fund
A scholarship will be awarded to an incoming or continuing law student who demonstrated financial need, has shown academic achievement and outstanding moral character. Preference will be given to law students who are interested in corporate law. Preference will also be given to students who have disabilities or challenges and are first time college/graduate students in their family.
- LGBTQ Alumni Scholarship
The LGBTQ Alumni Scholarship will provide a scholarship to be awarded to an LGBTQ student at USD School of Law, including entering 1L students, who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBTQ issues. Preference will be given to students who have overcome challenges in pursuit of their education.
- Procopio Diversity Scholarship
Candidates will be considered by the Assistant Dean of JD Admissions, Diversity Initiatives and Financial Aid, and the Procopio Committee, based upon overall qualifications for admission to USD School of Law, including academic record, financial need, commitment to increasing diversity and support for African American law students, demonstrating leadership in and for the black community in an effort to address racial injustice and prejudice. This scholarship will be available for candidates who have worked to better the experience of the nation’s African-American communities. Preference will be given to Black and/or African American applicants.
- Qualcomm IP Scholarship Program
The program provides an annual three-year award to three entering law students who are graduates of USD, the University of San Diego, California (UCSD) or San Diego State University (SDSU) and who have a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts or advanced degree in one of the following fields of study: Engineering (including Electrical Engineering), Computer Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Biologic Sciences, Bioengineering, Physics or Mathematics. Recipients must also demonstrate an interest in intellectual property or related areas of law. Under the terms of the grant, preference will be given to women, minorities, people with disabilities and veterans entering the civilian workforce consistent with Qualcomm’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Program designed to address the relatively low numbers of women and minorities in the STEM fields.
- Mary and Alan Schulman Scholarship
Students qualifying for two scholarships will be in the top half of the class and they must contribute to the diversity of the law school generally because of their socio-economic background, life experiences, personal circumstances or other obstacles they may have overcome.
- Steven J. Cologne Annual Named Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a law student who is committed to diversity, demonstrates need and has evidence of strong academic achievement.
- Turner Diversity Scholarship
This scholarship has been funded by Vickie Turner, a past Distinguished Award recipient. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need and has evidence of strong academic achievement.
- The Vargas Scholarship
Funded by a gift from USD Law Professor Jorge A. Vargas and his family, this scholarship is awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need, has evidence of strong academic achievement and makes a formal commitment to improve relations between the United States and Mexico in the legal or judiciary areas.
- Warren Family Endowment for Student Assistance
Several scholarships will be awarded to assist students in the second and third year full-time divisions. The awards are based on academic performance, financial need and demonstrated commitment to serving diverse communities.
