Preparing Professional Educators

Program Content and Pedagogy


  • Students preparing to teach middle or secondary school (grades 7-12) biology, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, or physics will major in the relevant discipline, completing all required courses for the major.
  • Students will finish their major contents with CAS Departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Environmental and Ocean Sciences, Mathematics, Physics & Biophysics.

Teaching Credential

  • Students will complete coursework to earn the secondary education teaching credential.
  • Students will complete a minimum of 100 hours of clinical or field experience in a school classroom supervised by experienced clinical faculty.
  • Students will finish their credential contents with SOLES.

Curriculum Requirements

  • Qualified students pursuing teacher education programs identified at a two-year institution* will be advised to follow the academic program that articulates with the ITPP at USD.
  • USD CAS and SOLES would accept the program as fulfillment of a portion of the teacher preparation curriculum.
  • The two-year curriculum will be sensitive to accreditation issues and include USD's Core curriculum requirements, introductory education courses, and prerequisites for advanced science major courses.
  • SDCCD academic counselors will offer help and consultation.
