Below are scholarship options for semester study abroad programs.
The USD International Center is pleased to offer USD Madrid Scholarship awards up to $1,000 each to students participating in the USD Madrid study abroad program.
Scholarship Submission Deadline: due at the time of program application
Eligibility
Students must meet the following requirements:
- Open an application to the USD Madrid Center semester program
- Complete the project proposal
- Current USD student
- Participate in the USD Madrid semester program
Overview
Propose a project idea to promote the USD Madrid Center. Proposals should include promotion before, during, and after the completion of their program abroad to market to future applicants. Students should use their creativity and utilize their strengths in their proposal.
Scholarship Award Requirements
If awarded the USD Madrid Center Scholarship, awardees are expected to:
- Execute the tasks indicated before, during, and after the program to promote study abroad for future applicants as outlined in their initial proposal application (approved by the International Center if awarded the scholarship)
Application Requirements
- Complete a detailed project proposal promoting the USD Madrid Center
- Submit the proposal with any additional supplemental materials that will help showcase your vision outlined in the proposal
The Spencer McDonald Scholarship in Computer Science and International Study Abroad, made possible through the generosity of Kirby and Diane McDonald and named after their grandson, Spencer (CS ’19), supports computer science majors with financial need wishing to study abroad.
Scholarship Submission Deadline:
Same deadline as the study abroad application (varies by term)
Eligibility:
Students must meet the following requirements:
- Declared USD computer science major
- Have demonstrated financial need (as designated by the Office of Financial Aid)
- Meet all study abroad eligibility requirements & complete all study abroad application requirements
- Attend a semester or short-term program abroad
Application Requirements:
- Complete the online study abroad application and submit all application requirements by the deadline
- Complete the online scholarship application form, including an essay explaining how studying abroad would impact your academic experience
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Scholarship is available for students attending a semester abroad in Cork, Ireland at University College Cork. Students may receive up to $2000 for this award.
Scholarship Submission Deadline:
Fall Study Abroad - Due Date: March 15th
Spring Study Abroad - Due Date: October 15th
Eligibility:
Students must meet the following requirements:
- Undergraduate student spending a semester abroad in Ireland
- Have demonstrated financial need (as designated by the Office of Financial Aid)
- Recipient must maintain enrollment and attend the program abroad
- Students have to submit the application form and include an essay
Application Requirements:
- Complete the application form and submit an essay (approx. 500 words)
- Essay Prompt: Please share a personal essay outlining why you decided to study abroad in Ireland (why Ireland versus another program) and what you hope to get out of your experience. Your essay may include:
- Any personal connection you have to Ireland
- Any knowledge you have of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick
- Any specific parts of Irish history you are interested in studying/learning about
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship - The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Gilman-McCain Scholarship - the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. To be eligible an undergraduate student must be the recipient of any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Application info and additional eligibility requirements are listed on the Gilman Scholarship website.
Fund for Education Abroad - FEA was created in order to open doors for deserving education abroad students. Starting with the 2011-2012 academic year, FEA will award funds for students planning to study abroad on any academically rigorous program. FEA scholarships are intended to meet the financial needs of students who might not be eligible for government grants or existing funds limited to specific programs or groups of students.
The Haley Takeda Scholarship honors former international business student Haley Takeda by helping make study abroad experiences more financially accessible for Knauss business students.

Eligibility: This opportunity is open to undergraduate business students who are actively involved in campus extracurriculars, such as an organization or club, planning to study abroad and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
