Top Beam Signed as Learning Commons' Progress Celebrated

The building progress on the currently under construction Learning Commons was far enough along to host a "Topping Off" ceremony on Thursday afternoon that allowed faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators the chance to sign a beam that had a small Christmas tree and an American flag attached to it before it was lifted by a crane to the top level.

Topping Out for Learning Commons Dec 2019

The Learning Commons, located north of Copley Library and to the west of Camino Hall, will be a new mixed-use educational facility when completed in time for Fall 2020 semester use.

Thursday's celebration was an update and a reminder of the Learning Commons' importance. Comments by University Operations Vice President Ky Snyder and President James T. Harris included thank yous to many stakeholders connected to the project.

Design features will include 24-hour study space, a minimum of 12 classrooms with seating for 25 to 40 people, lecture classroom with a 100-person capacity, coffee/snack service, and outdoor space. The building will be designed and constructed to LEED silver standards, all while maintaining the existing Spanish Renaissance style. The goal for this space is to stimulate collaboration and social interaction in an effort to maximize the educational experience. Construction began in Summer 2019.
