Torero Tradition: USD to Host 15th Annual Grandparents Weekend

A Torero tradition is upon us as the University of San Diego prepares to host the 15th annual gathering of grandparents and family members of current students for Grandparents’ Weekend, Feb. 22-24, on campus.

Hosted by the Office of Parent and Family Relations, this milestone year has a welcome reception on Friday afternoon and a full Saturday of uniquely USD activities — Gardens tour, culinary demonstration, campus tram tour, faculty-taught classes, Founders Chapel tour — the chance to attend a pre-game party and then exciting West Coast Conference men’s basketball game against Saint Mary’s. Sunday's scheduled includes Mass in Founders Chapel, a special family brunch on campus and then a San Diego city tour on a chartered bus.

The deadline for online registration is Feb. 19 and is $35 per person (USD students free with some exceptions). Separate costs include Saturday’s Torero pre-game party ($20 per person, $15 per USD student), tickets for Saturday’s men’s basketball game ($15 general admission ticket), the Sunday Torero Family Brunch ($20 per person, USD students complimentary) and the San Diego City Tour ($20 per person, including USD students).

Grandparents Weekend is a cherished event at USD. It’s a grand way for grandparents and families to spend quality time with their Torero niece, nephew, son or daughter.

Having the 15th annual celebration makes it clear that when Pat Whalen, grandparent of USD alumnae Holly ‘08 and Erica ‘13, first suggested USD start a Grandparents Weekend, she was onto something wonderful — the start of a true Torero Tradition.

"When Grandparents' Weekend was established, it was for us, the extension of a long, loving relationship with our granddaughters, Holly and Erica," Whalen said. "Holly was our first granddaughter to attend USD in 2004 and it was then that we became aware that USD offers more than just an education. We were thrilled when her sister, Erica, followed her in 2009. ... We can see the difference USD makes in the character of our young people. USD is truly an extension of not only education, but a moral and ethical lifestyle. I am so proud to have helped start our grandparents’ program with the help of a caring staff. We hope you will join us in this ongoing venture."
