The Theology and Religious Studies department is pleased to announce that James Keenan, SJ, PhD, professor of Moral Theology at Boston College, will deliver the 11th Annual Portman Lecture. Professor Keenan’s lecture entitled "Teaching HIV/AIDS and Ethics at American Universities Today" will focus on Catholic responses to the HIV/AIDS crisis.

James Keenan is a professor of theological ethics and holds the Founders Professorship of Theology at Boston College. He has been a Jesuit of the New York Province since 1970, and an ordained priest since 1982. In 1984, he was awarded a licentiate and four years later, he received a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. 

He has edited or written more than 250 articles articles and sixteen books including The Works of Mercy: The Heart of Catholicism, MoralWisdom: Lessons and Texts from the Catholic Tradition, and Ethics of the Word: Voices in the Catholic Church Today. Since 1987, he has written extensively on HIV/AIDS prevention from the standpoint of the Catholic moral tradition. 

Keenan’s lecture is sponsored by the Department of Theology and Religious Studies and funded by an endowment contributed in honor of Monsignor John R. Portman, the founding chair of the department.
