Paul S. Flores presented excerpts from On the Hill — based on interviews, dialogue, writing, theater, music and movement conducted with the Loco Bloco youth ensemble — about Alex Nieto’s recent murder at the hands of the San Francisco Police Department. Guided by the playwright and Loco Bloco staff, the youth speak with their families, various groups within their communities and with one another to collect stories about Nieto’s death. Their discoveries sparked anger, but their reflections also catalyzed a determination and reclamation of youth power and voice through art.

Loco Bloco (not in attendance) has a mission to promote San Francisco youth’s healthy transition into adulthood by engaging them in the creation and performance of music, dance and theater rooted in Afro-Latino traditions. Loco Bloco encourages its youth to use multicultural art forms as a tool for their own empowerment and to help them overcome discrimination and bring about change in their communities.

Paul S. Flores fascilitated the workshop Leading with Healing on Thursday afternoon.

Poet, performance artist, playwright and spoken-word artist Paul S. Flores explores the intersection of urban culture, hip-hop and transnational identity rooted in his experience growing up in Chula Vista, Calif., and Tijuana, Mexico. His works include the play PLACAS: The Most Dangerous Tattoo, a bilingual tale of the transformation and redemption of fathers and sons; the solo performance You’re Gonna Cry; and the two-hander REPRESENTA!. Flores has developed a national platform for young people as the co-founder of Youth Speaks and Brave New Voices: National Teen Poetry Slam. He teaches hip-hop theater and spoken word at the University of San Francisco.
