The idea of freedom of association is well entrenched in constitutional law, but its meaning, scope, and constitutional and theoretical underpinnings remain contested and uncertain. How, if at all, is freedom of association connected to the constitutional text? Is freedom of association a unified right, or a label for a variety of different rights, or is it perhaps superfluous because it is fully reducible into other, more securely grounded rights? What sorts of associations can claim the benefit of the right? How should conflicts between freedom of association and other rights and interests be resolved?
The purpose of this conference is to reflect on and discuss some or all of these questions.
