The adoption of scientific and computational techniques from stratigraphy to LiDAR have allowed archaeologists to gain an increasingly fine-grained picture of the past. New tools — both large datasets and the AI models to analyze them — can provide more detail to the world of the past than ever before. What is novel about these new techniques is not just the information they will yield but that they also constitute an approach to the division of labor between humans and computers different from anything that has hitherto appeared in archaeological work. In this lecture, maritime archaeologist John Albertson will explore these groundbreaking developments.
