The Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) invites you to join a roundtable discussion with ACLU Equity Staff Attorney Melissa Deleon and President-Elect of Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego Esther Bylsma who will discuss the impact of social discourse on Asian American communities. 

About the speakers:

Esther Lee Bylsma is an attorney at Schneider Wallace Cottrell Konecky LLP with extensive experience representing plaintiffs in complex class actions.  Her practice currently focuses on representing employees in employment class actions.  Prior to joining Schneider Wallace, Esther represented shareholders in M&A and federal securities class actions throughout the country.  Esther received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School, and her BA from the University of California, Berkeley.   Esther currently serves as the President-elect of the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego.  She is also a member of the Korean American Bar Association of San Diego, a board member on her daughter’s PTO organization, and a regular volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House.

Melissa Deleon (she/her) is the equity staff attorney at the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, where she focuses on developing legal advocacy and litigation to address education equity issues, such as the school to prison pipeline, school budget accountability, and opportunity gaps for students of color. She also works on other equity issues, including LGBTQ rights, housing equity, and advocacy on behalf of transgender students at school. Melissa joined the ACLU in June of 2017. Prior to the ACLU, she worked at CaseyGerry, LLP, where she was a member of the aviation team and helped victims of injuries and civil rights violations. Deleon has served on the board of directors of the National Filipino American Lawyers Association and is currently a member of NFALA’s advocacy committee. She is past president of Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego and was on the board of directors of Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego. She is a graduate of California Western School of Law and San Diego State University, where she studied journalism. Deleon is a native San Diegan, raised in Oceanside, California. Her hobbies include reading, yoga, and hanging with her two rescue dogs, Lily and Lucy. 

Viet Mai is a Social Innovation Strategist from San Diego, CA who helps groups build peace and design impact through culture and conversation. In addition, he is a career educator and spoken word artist, Program Facilitator with the Village of Promise Collective Mentoring Program, Co-Founder of Vincii, Inc., Creator of The Likehearted Method, and a Gen V RISE San Diego Urban Leadership Fellow.
