The popular Screenings series continues this spring with a single-channel work by Susan Hiller titled Lost and Found (2016). Hiller recorded the voices of 23 different indigenous people—in each case the best known speaker of an endangered or extinct language that she could find—and used an oscilloscope to translate their improvised speech into a vibrating green line. This video is part of the artist’s lifelong engagement with anthropological method, having studied linguistics at Hunter College in New York.
