ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Janice Rogers Brown is a former United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She was an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court from May 2, 1996, until her appointment to the D.C. Circuit. She retired from the federal bench on August 31, 2017.
Born in Greenville, Alabama, Brown graduated from California State University with her bachelor's degree in 1974, from the UCLA School of Law with her J.D. in 1977, and from the University of Virginia School of Law with her LL.M. in 2004.

Established by long-time La Jolla resident and civic activist Joan E. Bowes, the speaker series was created to promote the open exchange of ideas and to inspire law students and other members of the San Diego community. Bearing the name of James Madison—fourth president of the United States and "Father of the Constitution"—this annual series brings distinguished speakers from the fields of law, diplomacy, government and politics to the University of San Diego.
