From NAFTA to USMCA: Evolution of the Trade Relationship between Mexico and the US”

The history of trade relations between Mexico and the U.S. had a turning point in NAFTA. There is a success story to tell from the 25 years of this agreement and also a number of pending issues. The modernization of NAFTA that resulted in the USMCA could have been an excellent opportunity to address those pending issues and negotiate a completely modernized NAFTA. Whereas the USMCA is that in many aspects, it is undeniable that the political environment both in Mexico and in the U.S. played a fundamental role in the outcome.

In this presentation, Mr. Guillermo Malpica Soto, Head of the Trade and NAFTA Office at the Embassy of Mexico, walks the audience through the results of NAFTA, challenges associated with the USMCA, and next steps in the bilateral trade relation.

Presentation from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in KIPJ Theatre; Networking event from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in KIPJ Rotunda
