Sleep and wake are fundamental behavioral states important for survival, and universal in animals with sufficiently complex nervous systems. An essential aspect of sleep-wake behavior is the ability to rapidly transition from one state to another and persist in that state to engage in behaviors critical for survival and reproduction. In this talk, Divya Sitaraman, PhD, explores if studies of genes, neurons and circuits in simple animal models can illuminate how we balance rest and activity and engage in different behaviors in an unpredictable world. Sitaraman is an assistant professor of psychological sciences.

Reception to follow.
