Like a Man on Earth gathers the voices of a group of African refugees who, due to an agreement between Italy and Libya to halt immigration from the southern shores of the Mediterranean, were pushed back by Italian authorities and ended up in Libyan prisons, where they endured inhumane conditions. In Like a Man on Earth this experience is narrated by Segre’s co-director Dagmawi Yimer, a law student from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), who fled his country in 2005. The film presents Mr. Yimer’s viewpoint and that of his eight interviewees, who shared with Dagmawi similar experiences of detention and migration. Mr. Yimer decided to collect his own memories and those of his peers to break the incomprehensible silence about what happens to migrants who attempt to enter fortress Europe.

The film is in English, Amharic and Italian with English subtitles. Additional information is available at this website: www.zalab.org/en/projects/like-a-man-on-earth/

Andrea Segre is a critically acclaimed film and documentary director whose work has received numerous awards. For over ten years he has been particularly dedicated to the topic of migration and is the founder of ZaLab, an association whose aim is the production and distribution of social documentaries and cultural projects in a participatory mode that seek to convey the complex process of migration while avoiding the trap of turning the refugees’ stories into a spectacle for western audiences.
