After this bitter election period, if you feel like we are all living in two distinctly different Americas — you are right. At least on social media. Nearly half of adult Americans get their news from Facebook. The problem is — Facebook knows your beliefs based on your activity and then shows you more of the same. This creates something called filter bubbles. You begin to see only the content you like and agree with, while Facebook hides dissenting points of view. Does this undermine democracy by creating confirmation bias and providing a context ripe for propaganda and misinformation?

Join Dr. Mary Brinson, a professor in the Communication Studies Department, to discuss where and how this is happening and the possible impact it had on the 2016 election.

For ages 55 and up.
