Details

To prepare for his participation in the Annapolis Convention of 1786 and the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention of 1787, James Madison undertook a work of humanistic scholarship that resulted in two short texts: "Notes on Ancient and Modern Confederacies" and "Vices of the Political System of the United States".

As part of its Humanities and the New Political Landscape series of events, the Humanities Center will host a "Vices" discussion group that will meet twice during the Spring 2017 semester. For the first session, we will read and discuss the Articles of Confederation and Madison's "Vices" memorandum. For the second session, we will read the US Constitution of 1787, and discuss ways in which Madison's approach in the "Vices" memorandum can be applied to contemporary constitutional problems.

The discussion group will be facilitated by Paul Evans (Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities), and faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to participate.

RSVP by emailing humanitiescenter@sandiego.edu. You will need to pick up your reading selections in advance of the program.
