Juana Adcock is a poet, translator and performer working in English and Spanish. She was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1982 to an English father and Mexican mother, and brought up bilingual from early childhood. Her poems and translations have been publsihed in magazines such as Magma, Shearsman, Structo, Words without Borders, Asymptote, Kenyon Review, Gutter, Glasgow Review of Books, New Writing Scotland, The Dark Horse and several anthologies in Mexico, the UK and further afield. Her first poetry collection, Manca (Tierra Adentro, 2014) explores the anatomy of violence in Mexico and was named by Reforma’s distinguished critic Sergio González Rodríguez as one of the best books published that year. It is available in an English translation by Robin Myers published by Argonáutica in 2019. In 2016 Adcock was named one of the ‘Ten New Voices From Europe’ by the organisation Literature Across Frontiers, and she has performed at numerous festivals internationally. In 2006 she received a year-long writing fellowship from CONARTE in Mexico, and in 2016 she was awarded a Scottish artists’ fellowship to complete a writing residency in Banff, Canada. She has translated and co-translated some of the most exciting writers working in the Spanish language today, such as Gabriela Wiener, Diego Enrique Osorno, Hubert Matiuwaa and Giuseppe Caputo. Her English-language poetry debut, Split, deals with desire, migration, love and the borders around the global south, and is due out in 2019 from Blue Diode Press. She has lived in Glasgow since 2007, where she also plays in the bands Las Mitras and The Raptors.
