Details

Many philosophers have been drawn to the idea that talk of “owing-to,” “obligations-to,” “duties-to” and the like have a special, perhaps irreducible status (e.g., Darwall 2006). But few people have noticed that such “to-concepts” are open an old-fashioned reductive definition: the “to” drops out of the analysis. “I owe phi to you” just means “I owe you phi.” This talk explains how owing can be “relational” (without the “to”) in the light of double-entry accounting and the nature and history of money.
