Since the turn of the 20th century and the beginnings of musical modernism with notorious figures such as Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky, modern music has been popularly regarded as chaotic, incomprehensible and unlistenably dissonant. Dr. Adler interrogates our hazy concepts of dissonance and their deployment as a rhetorical strategy for the rejection of modern music in discourse ranging from popular culture to empirical musicology. Framing modern music as a subculture and a musically imagined community allows us to better understand this rhetoric of dissonance and gain new empathy with a vital, living musical tradition.

Christopher Adler, PhD, is a Professor of Music in the Department of Music.
