Teófilo Ruiz, PhD, will discuss the history of Cuba from its early years as the strategic Spanish position in the Caribbean, serving as link for the biannual fleets that connected the Old World to the New, the 19th century wars for independence, the U.S. intervention and the troubled political history of the first half of the 20th century. The last part of the talk will focus on the Cuban Revolution from his own experiences in the late 1950s and early 60s, with some reflection on the possible futures for the island and its people.
