Serving as accreditation leader for SOLES, Steven Gelb had an intimate view of the higher education accountability movement. He provides an utterly compelling narrative of that process and argues that the frantic activity around accreditation serves as procedural display that deflects faculty energy and institutional resources from teaching, research and service. He believes that the types of evidence that would provide us with a balanced view of accreditation’s costs and effects have yet to be collected. He calls for vigorous engagement by faculty with administrators and accreditation agencies around the increasingly unreasonable demands of accreditation, along with investigation of accreditation’s effects on faculty integrity and morale. Join us for the talk and ensuing discussion on this important topic.

Steven Gelb, Ph.D., Professor, School of Leadership and Education Sciences and Director of Research for the Leadership Institute. He is the former Acting Dean of SOLES and served as Associate Dean of SOLES for many years. His current research interests include leadership development, peace studies and peace education, collaborative action research, and disability studies. He is a recipient of USD’s University Professorship award for outstanding, balanced, career contributions supporting the mission and goals of the university.
