Tire Recycling Innovation Track ($7,000)

It is estimated that the United States alone generates an astonishing 246 million waste tires per year. If not disposed of properly or recycled responsibly, waste tires can have hazardous effects on the environment and the health of the surrounding population. Existing government initiatives, nonprofits, and for-profit organizations have aimed to improve recycling efficiency by creating innovative uses for waste tires such as flooring, sealants, outdoor walkways, and synthetic turf. Given the sheer scope of this problem locally and globally, we call upon social innovators to imagine additional creative solutions.

This inaugural track, sponsored by Cal Recycle, will award seed funding to entrepreneurs who aspire to work at the nexus of innovation, zero waste, and the circular economy. Innovators will propose new types of tire-derived products, end-use applications, or ways to expand and strengthen existing markets and infrastructure.

  • Eligibility: All semi-finalist teams focusing on creating new innovations or improving existing solutions centered around used tire recycling that submit their round 2 submissions to CPC by April 26, 2019.

Women Innovators Track ($5,000)

Historically, women have been less likely to enter pitch competitions, start companies, and find significant financing for their venture when they do pursue it. To change this, we have encouraged and challenged women through our Women Innovators Initiative to think big, connect wide, and dig deep. This track, sponsored by Ann Navarra, has helped the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge to reach gender parity in the last two years.

  • Eligibility: 2019 Fowler GSIC finalist teams from all participating universities that have at least one woman in a leadership role on the team.
  • Submissions by: June 6, 2019
  • Pitching on: June 14-15, 2019
  • Results declared on: June 15, 2019
  • Awards: Judge-choice awards totaling $5,000
