Details

A Memorial Reading of the Poetry of Richard Wilbur will be held in the French Parlor, Founders Hall, on Thursday, September 20, 2018, 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Wilbur died last year at the age of 96.  He was one of the foremost poets of his generation, winning a Pulitzer Prize twice, a National Book Award, and a Bollingen Prize.  His translations of Moliere’s plays into English couplets are still standard; he won a PEN/Mannheim Prize for translation. Of the major poets of his time, he was the most traditional: almost all of his poems are in regular meter and rhyme.

Everyone is invited to read and/or listen.  If you want to read, there is a small stack of Wilbur poems on the left as you enter the English Office, Founders 174, together with a sign-up sheet and instructions.

Refreshments will be served.  Put the rest of your day on hold for about 45 minutes and listen to beautiful poetry!

Contact Fred Robinson at fredr@sandiego.edu if you have any questions.  Next Wednesday, September 19, from 4-6 p.m. he will be in his office (Founders 175C) if anyone wants to practice recitation with him.
