Every May, as students move out of their residence halls we find the campus dumpster bursting with things like mini-microwaves, clothing, bedding and more. These items are usually still in top condition but students find it easier to toss them rather than to pack them or keep them over the summer. In an effort to be more sustainable and mindful of those in need, this year the Office of Parent Relations, Parent Corps, Office of Sustainability, The Mulvaney Center for Community Awareness and Social Action, and the Disabled American Veterans organization have teamed up to create USD’s Green Move-Out Project!

We are asking students to donate the items they no longer want rather than throw them away. However, we can’t do this without YOU! For three days – Tuesday, May 22 through Thursday, May 24, donation bins will be stationed throughout the main residence halls and we need volunteers to supervise them. You will not be moving, lifting, or sorting items. All we ask is that you call attention to the bins if you see students walking by. Volunteers from Disabled American Veterans will be emptying the bins regularly and will deal with sorting/cataloguing items. Afterwards, the items will be sold at the Disabled American Veterans thrift stores and the proceeds of the sales will go directly to aiding San Diego disabled veterans.

In an effort to make it as convenient as possible for students to donate their items, 15 different donation stations will exist throughout campus and we need volunteers starting as early as 8 a.m. and as late as 9 p.m. to supervise them. If you think you can be available for even an hour, please don’t hesitate to sign up. We will need a lot of help to make this work!

To volunteer, please sign up on this Google Sheet and indicate times and days you are available to work. The Office of Parent and Family Relations will follow up afterward via email with more information and to request your shirt size.

Thank you so much for all that you do to make USD the wonderful caring community that it is!

Go Toreros!
