USD Celebrates Its First-Generation Community Nov. 8-13

The University of San Diego is the academic home to many current students, faculty, staff and even administrators — including USD President James T. Harris, DEd, Vice President and Provost Gail F. Baker, PhD and Student Affairs Vice President Carmen Vazquez — who identify as first-generation college students and first-generation college graduates.

The first-generation term, defined by USD as “at the time you completed high school or high school equivalency, your custodial parent(s) or legal guardian(s) had not earned a bachelor's degree or higher,” isn’t something to dismiss. A first-generation student may experience some shyness or need to ask more questions, but at USD, first-generation college students are fully embraced. The university is recognized as a First Forward institution by NASPA's Center for First-Generation Student Success.

Beginning Sunday, November 8, which is National First-Gen College Student Day, USD will celebrate on Instagram @USDFirstGen throughout the week. There are events organized by several USD campus entities for a USD First-Generation College Celebration Week through Nov. 13.

The hashtag #CelebrateFirstGen will be used by USD Instagram accounts all week long. Here are the scheduled virtual events:
