Fun-Filled Wine Classic Raises Funds for Student Scholarships

The 11th annual University of San Diego Wine Classic, a fun-filled weekend featuring a Vintner’s Dinner on July 13 and the Wine Classic on July 14, provided everyone the chance to enjoy themselves while at the same time provide much-needed scholarship support for current Toreros.

The USD Alumni Association’s signature scholarship fundraising event has become a Torero Tradition for attendees 21 and up. It is a can’t-miss San Diego summer event. This year’s weekend events raised $100,000, to push the total raised for the USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund to $650,000 since its inception.

The Vintners Dinner, held on Saturday night, was exclusively hosted by the Mondavi family. Special guest and USD alumna Alycia Mondavi ’07 provided guests with a unique opportunity to experience new wines from the wine family’s fourth-generation winery, Flat Top Hills. A reception started the proceedings, followed by dinner and wine pairings with food from USD’s on-campus restaurant, La Gran Terraza.

On Sunday early afternoon, there was a VIP Early Access Crush Reception enabling guests to enjoy exclusive featured wines by select wineries, delicious cuisine, all while mingling with winemakers and sponsors just prior to the Wine Classic.

From 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the Garden of the Sea behind the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, approximately 700 ticketholders enjoyed wine tastings from 29 wineries owned or operated by USD alumni, parents and friends, gourmet food and live entertainment. There was a Wine Wall, silent auction and a special raffle (only 150 tickets available) for a seaside getaway to Santa Barbara valued at more than $2,000 with hotel, a three-day BMW rental car, a one-year Folded Hills Wine Club Membership and Grapeline’s Vineyard Picnic Tour.

A few more beverage options were provided to Wine Classic guests, including Ryan Bros. Coffee Cold Brew, offered as a special tasting at the end of the Wine Classic, and Absolution Brewing Company’s USD-connected beers, Torero BOLD India Pale Ale and Torero Blue Blonde Ale, were poured in small doses.

As much of a success as the 2019 Wine Classic weekend was, the university has already announced that the 2020 events are scheduled for July 11 (Vintner’s Dinner) and July 12 (Wine Classic). Early-bird ticket sales expected to start in April.
