American Dream and Promise Act Legislation Update

Introduced by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-California) on March 12, 2019, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6) was passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 237-to-187 on Tuesday.

This Act (also called the “Dream Act of 2019”) would provide Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients as well as Dreamers brought to America as children, protection from deportation and an opportunity to obtain permanent legal status if they meet certain requirements. The Act would also provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders and individuals with Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) with protections from deportation and a pathway to permanent legal status if they meet certain requirements.

In line with Catholic social teaching and its emphasis on the dignity of the individual, as well as USD’s strategic plan, Envisioning 2024, which calls on our community to ‘confront humanity’s urgent challenges,’ USD reaffirms its commitment to protecting and supporting this marginalized community and supports the passage of H.R. 6.
