Petition to Transfer Credits

Need advising on transferring credits from a community college or other university? Your advisor or the Undergraduate Admissions department can help.

How to Petition to Transfer Credit:

    • Current students who are looking to transfer credits to the University of San Diego should access the "Transfer Credit/Articulation" section of their "MyAcademic" tabs of the MySanDiego portal.
    • In the portal, students will be able to search for already approved equivalencies by external institution or USD course number.
    • If a course is not listed among the ones already approved, students should use one of the following two forms to petition for transfer of credit:
    • To transfer credit from an international university or study abroad program, whether affiliated or non-affiliated, student should visit the International Center website or meet with an International Studies Abroad advisor in Saints Tekakwitha and Serra Hall, Room 315.

Transfer Requirements

  • Courses taken as Pass/Fail are not accepted.
  • Only courses passed with a grade of C- or better are accepted for transfer.
  • All students are subject to USD's residence requirement which stipulates that the final 30 units must be completed at USD unless a waiver is approved by the Dean’s Office.
The following changes to the transfer of credit policy will be in effect during the Fall 2020 semester, the December 2020 Special Session, the January Intersession 2021, the Spring 2021 semester and the Summer 2021 semester:
  • Online courses taken by students who are on an approved leave of absence from the university may be accepted for transfer of credit when they return to USD.
  • Full-time, continuing students may transfer online courses from colleges and universities in San Diego County or their county of residence. In extenuating circumstances, courses from other schools may be approved by the Dean's Office.
  • Online courses must otherwise meet the usual criteria for transfer of credit. Before signing up for a class off campus, please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for further details on these regulations and contact the Dean's Office if you need clarification regarding possible waivers.

Some tips

  • A transfer course is much more likely to be approved if there is a "reasonable parallel" to a course in the current department at USD.
  • To transfer credit from any international or study abroad program, whether affiliated or non-affiliated, please meet with an International Studies Abroad advisor in Saints Tekakwitha and Serra Hall, Room 315.
  • To arrange transfer credit from a course you plan to take at a college or university in the United States, login to your MySanDiego account. Under the Torero Hub Tab, click on My Academics.
  • Keep in mind USD's residence requirement, which stipulates that you must take your final 30 units at USD, unless you have a waiver from your dean.

NOTE: that USD does not accept transfer credit for online courses.
